We have a huge crush on the kimono and we are going to expand our love by showing you how to wear it. We asked three stylish and loveable girls from Amsterdam to combine The Style Lion’s new kimono’s from the spring summer 2014 collection with their own wardrobe.
Kicking of with Catalina Mosquera Rosas, a happy customer we met while working in one of our favorite ‘mobile offices’, the coffee company. This pretty girl is rocking the kimono in a date-night outfit, a daily wear and a festival look.
Miss Rosas, let me hear your thoughts on the kimono.
I am a fan of kimonos. They instantly give you that hippie look without putting too much effort into your outfit. It is a great piece for summer!
I love that this kimono is pink. When we think of pink we often think of it as girly, but in fact I (as a “should-I-wear-all-black-today” kinda gal) think that we should wear more pink, embrace your inner Barbie! I’m happy to see some more pink on the catwalk and streets lately.
Style the kimono with a simple white top for a casual lunch.
How would you describe your style?
To be honest I’m still exploring and defining my style. I mix and match basic black pieces with a good knit or a lovely blouse trying to make it a little bit less funeral. Because of the typical Dutch weather, chill, lots of rain and windy, I have a crazy collection of amazing coats. The reason why my coat rack recently collapsed, but it’s worth it. When you have been parading in front of the mirror what to wear it always ends up under your coat. I won’t let it mess my outfit. Coats… definitely a Dutch must have.

What influences your style?
My friends, blogs like the sartorialist, Tumblr (the-heat.tumblr.com) and fffffound. I also visit Asos, Topshop, Urban Outfittes and Mymummadeit.net a lot. While looking at their outfits I critize them in my mind one by one; “Uwl, NO!, Oh that’s nice, OMG, GOD MADE THIS FOR ME… That instant love shamelessly makes my bank account go back to zero.
If you had to pick one item, everyone should have in their closet, what would it be?
A black skinny jeans with high waist, by far! (mine is from American Apparel). I can’t see the reasons not to have one. They’ll make your legs and butt look great and just go with everything. You can wear them to your grandma in a cozy, casual way and by changing the top you’re ready for a night out.
Let’s get ready to date with a neoprene skirt and a black textured rose sweater.
Name three items you can’t picture yourself without?
Black skinny jeans from AA. My leather jacket, I found on Waterlooplein (a daily Flea market in Amsterdam). It’s quite tough but so beautifully made and it got all those cool zippers. Every time I wear it, I smile! And of course all my white vintage blouses (I have at least 15 of them). I love that they make me look girly and classy at the same time.
Would you rather be at a party underdressed or overdressed?
Definitely overdressed! There’s only one little problem in my lovely closet… It’s way to basic, there is not so much to go crazy overdressed with. Possibly because of the lack of events in Amsterdam that allows you to go crazy. Even during Amsterdam Fashion Week the Dutch practical mentality overrules those happy outrageous few that know how to shine. At night, you’ll probably see me in a vintage crop top from Pauw and I’ll try to make my hair big and messy. Maybe basic, but you’ll never see me at the club without making an effort to look amaze.
Sweet pink with black leather to give it an edge.
If you take a look at the way people dress nowadays in The Netherlands, what would you change or advise?
I think people in Amsterdam dress really well. Even great sometimes! Though, I think people from the smaller parts of our little country should try to wear a little less practical and a bit more personal clothing. Keep the Uggs for inside (we all have them, I know) and slip into some heels, take a good haircut and please try to stay away from studs and flashy colors. The Dutch have so much potential, since we love good quality basics. That makes a great starting point for personal style. And I would also advise not to look at the size label so much but more what it actually looks like in the mirror. There are so many girls trying to squeeze in a size 36 looking like a sausage, who would probably look great in a size 40!

We love how Cata gives our sweet pink kimono an edge. In love with black, she mixes it up with crazy shapes or contrasting materials, like the neoprene skirt or the pastel pink knit. Don’t be afraid to dress or doll up for a party or date. We all have those killer shoes and clothing in our wardrobe, so let’s bring back date night. Please, listen to Cata, don’t play it to safe. Fashion is a way of identifying yourself to the world. We are so much more than practically beating the Dutch weather.
